Have students make frames in a separate lesson.
Control the chalk dust by shaking, not blowing, it into a wastebasket.
Use a kneaded eraser or damp sponge to remove smudge marks and mistakes.
Cover chalk pastel portrait with newsprint while designing frame, to keep portrait from smudging.
